Flagler Library's Paws to Read Program Helps Young Readers Build Confidence

Young readers in Palm Coast have a new incentive to practice their literacy skills: furry, four-legged listeners who never judge and always encourage.

The Flagler County Public Library's "Paws to Read" program pairs children with licensed therapy dogs every Wednesday afternoon at the Bunnell Library @ Nexus, giving early readers a comfortable, low-pressure environment to build confidence with books.

Program Details

The weekly reading sessions run from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. and are designed for children ages 4 to 10. During each session, kids read aloud to certified therapy dogs, who provide patient, non-judgmental companionship while young readers practice.

Research shows that reading to therapy animals can help children improve fluency, reduce anxiety around reading, and build self-esteem in struggling readers.
